| Content Description | Claims "I bought another man today at $1400 which leave[s] a balance in my hands of $4500." See GLC01445.05 for the bill of sale for a slave named Joe. Says the man is a farm hand. Says if he wants to buy more slaves that he should do it quickly because the prices are going up daily. Says he has enclosed the bills of sale other slaves. (see GLC01445). Says "Men are hiring here for 250 to $300 [for] Farm hands[.] girls for house use I believe are worth 150." Has not sold Sylvia or Betty yet, but claims that he is not losing money by the delay, since prices are going very high. Place of creation inferred from the postmark, which is from 1 January 1863 in Richmond, Virginia. Also has a partially torn and postmarked five cent Confederate States stamp on address leaf. |
