Additional Information Frederick W. Seward served as Assistant Secretary of State under his father William Henry Seward, who served as Secretary of State from 1860-1869. When William H. Seward was injured in 1865, Frederick W. Seward became acting Secretary. Brainerd, a lawyer, contributed historical and analytical notes to Abraham Lincoln's Cooper Institute address given on 27 February 1860 when it was published.
