Title Thomas Goldthwait to Thomas Flucker stating that he will go ahead with building a new town
Date 16 February 1766
Author Goldthwait, Thomas (1717-1799)
Recipient Flucker, Thomas
Document Type Correspondence
Content Description Written from Fort Pownall, at present-day Stockton Springs, Maine. Reports that although he has not had a recent letter from Flucker, he plans to proceed with constructing the new township as soon as spring arrives. Writes, "I can form no opinion from the papers which I've seen how the opposition to the stamp act is likely to issue. IF it should end in allowing the Colonies a representation in Parliament I think it will be making bad, worse...But this is a dangerous subject to handle - & I'll quit it lest I should be brought to confession under the tree of liberty." Discusses his views on the Stamp Act, which suggest he is a Loyalist, supporting the British government and believing the colonists should pay their taxes.
