Additional Information | Robert Anderson was the commanding officer at Fort Sumter. While he supported slavery, his loyalty went to the army he served in. As the struggle between North and South heated up he attempted to avoid confrontation but also protect the safety of his troops. After surrendering Fort Sumter, he and his men removed to New York. |
