Content Description | Includes a letter from Secretary of War William L. Marcy, lists of academic and military staff, and cadets listed in order of merit in their respective classes. William E. Jones ranks 10 in the fourth class. Also includes roll of the cadets arranged according to merit; Jones ranks 81st. Written at the U.S. Military Academy and signed by McDowell on unnumbered page 15. The Academic Staff includes Gustavus W. Smith, William S. Rosecrans and E.P. Scammon, among others (p. 3); the Military Staff includes Irvin McDowell, Adjutant of the Academy and Secretary of the Academic Board (p.4). Among the famous cadets listed are Fitz-John Porter (merit rank #8 in the First Class, conduct rank #62), George B. McClellan (merit rank #4 in the Second Class, conduct rank #102), Thomas J. Jackson (merit rank #20 in the Second Class; conduct rank #1), George E. Pickett, Ambrose P. Hill (merit rank #62 out of 62 in the Second Class, with a deficiency in all subjects; conduct rank #80), Ambrose E. Burnside and Andrew J. Donelson (Andrew Jackson's nephew). |
