Title Land sale agreement between William and Charles Gardiner and Richard Van Dyke
Date 17 March 1815
Author Van Dyke, Richard (fl. 1815)
Document Type Land transaction document
Content Description Also signed by William Gardiner and Charles Gardiner. Mentions eight Iroquois for whom Van Dyke was making the transaction. The Indians names were Lieutenant Colonel Lewis Atayataghroughta, Captain James Wakarontharane, Captain Honyere Tewahongarakon, Captain John Otaawigton, Lieutenant Cornelius Kahiktoton, Lieutenant John Sagoharase, Lieutenant Hanyost Thaosagwat, and Lieutenant Nicholas Kaghantshonan. The agreement records a transaction to transfer lands to the Gardiners from the Iroquois Indians. Outlines the process by which Van Dyke will obtain the patents for the land in Washington, D.C. and sell to Gardiner's for one dollar per acre. Indicates that Van Dyke will receive some land and the Indians will receive half of their payment in goods from a store in Manlius, New York, where the Gardiners and Van Dyke were from. The listed Iroquois had been given commissions by Philip Schuyler (authorized by the Continental Congress) during the 1779 Sullivan-Clinton Campaign of the Revolutionary War and consequently received the land for their service.
