Date 24 July 1791

Content Description References Knox's letter of 17 July. Will forward the letter Knox included for David Cobb. Claims that Cobb will write him and President Washington about the Postmaster General position. Tells Knox that Cobb's situation is "a very unpleasant one." Reports that Cobb is out of debt, but that he has 11 children and a wife to support without the means of doing so. Says that Cobb needs an appointment to a federal job to sustain himself. Reports Philips, the chairman of the Committee of the Sale of Eastern Lands, met with him and they discussed possible purchases. Will not do anything until the whole committee is informed. Has decided to wait to transfer the 25 bank shares, as he has no proper way to convey them. Suggests that Knox draw up the necessary papers and forward them. Says "Harry I shall be greatly disappontd if you do not succeed in my behalf with the President to fill the vacancy of Marshall, it is my hobby horse." Asks him to mention it to Robert Morris "and ask his influence he will go any length to serve me." Also wants Alexander Hamilton involved. Is sure John Jay and the other judges will be in his favor. Hopes Knox will visit next month. Is happy Lucy Knox and her new child are able to ride now. Says the weather has been hot and the country "burnt up."
