Content Description In his letter to Rawlins, Hewit requests the use of a steam boat as a hospital, and requests that no transfers of sick men be made at this time. The letter is dated 20 March 1862. Grant's undated docket reads "Surgeon Hewit, Medical Director, will make such arrangements for the sick as in his judgment [] be necessary." Some text loss.

Additional Information Henry S. Hewit was the medical director on Grant's staff. Breveted Colonel in 1865. John A. Rawlins a entered the army as a Captain and as Grant's aide-de-camp and assistant adjutant general. Rose to the rank of Brigadier General. Served as Secretary of War under Grant for five months before his death.
