In writing on that subject for my book I had to rely on memory." States that the first volume of his personal memoirs is in print. Additional Information Grant died eleven days after this was written, on 23 July 1885, of throat cancer. Eaton served as chaplain to the Ohio Volunteer Infantry, colonel of the 63rd United States Colored Infantry Regiment, and superintendent in charge of freedmen, based on Grant's appointment.
