Additional Information The unnamed general mentioned is George Washington. His expense journal indicates that he went to Poughkeepsie on November 17 for an interview with Governor Clinton [GW Papers at the Library of Congress]. Lillie had been sent to New York City by Knox to deliver his 9 November letter (GLC02437.02761) to Sir Guy Carleton and to await the British commander's response.
