Content Description Official Report of General Lee regarding Shepherdstown, Dispatches from General McClellan Regarding Antietam and South Mountain. An article describes Mrs. Sallie Swope, who served in army hospitals in Alabama, while another defines women in hospitals in general. An editorial examines slavery as the "wisest and best provision for that large class of our fellow-men, who are compelled to labor, under the guidance of their superiors." Articles encourage readers to care for destitute soldiers, beware of extortionists, and provide the paper to soldiers. About one-fifth of page 3 is devoted to war news.
