Content Description Expresses his distress at her being hospitalized. Explains that his distress arises mostly from her inability to continue to do her fine work. He also offers his assistance in helping her attain her goal. Typed on White House stationery in green ink with header, The White House Washington. Stationery watermarked Whiting's Woven Linen.

Additional Information Gardener was born Alice Chenoweth. She was a suffragette and in 1920, Wilson appointed her to the United States Civil Service Commission, the first woman to occupy so high a federal position.
