Title | War-time home of Lydia Leister |
Document Type | Photograph |
Content Description | This is the war-time home of Lydia Leister. Leister was a widow at the time of the battle, her husband having died in 1859. She lived in this home with her children while owning and farming almost fifty acres of land. The road that runs to the right of the home is the Taneytown Road; the camera was facing towards the town of Gettysburg. Cemetery Ridge is located to the left, out of the shot. During the battle, General George Gordon Meade, commander of the Union Army, made this house his headquarters. It was the scene of heavy bombardment on July 3rd just before Pickett’s charge; notice the damage done to the home. Leister returned to find her home in this state after the battle. She worked to repair the damage and continue farming. She lived in this house until the late 1870s. |
