Additional Information Following his retirement and return to the U.S. in 1910 after an African safari, Roosevelt emerged as the leader in the progressive wing of the Republican party. Concerned about the increasingly conservative bent in the Taft administration, he declared in February 1912, his candidacy for the Republican nomination despite his longtime vow he would not seek a third term. His support of the progressive, or Bull Moose, ticket fatally split the beleaguered Republican party, paving the way for Woodrow Wilson's election.
