Additional Information The Hartford Evening Press was a partisan newspaper established by Gideon Welles, the Secretary of the Navy under Lincoln, in 1856. Hawley became editor in 1857. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Grant at Appomattox on 9 April 1865.
