Dearly beloved mother
I have received yours and fathers in good health and hope that father and mother are in good health I send mother ten oranges a jacket and father’s winter frock and a pair of shoes and a scarf here is no news but that the assembly are producing more work than ever before an act has been passed there that all debts of over 5 years do not have to be paid and that all those books have to be burned here is a good lesson (how the biggest pot of porridge gets the most xxx brown sugar ?) Milady is very angry that the grand jury have represented it I would have sent father’s goods up earlier but I expected father here Mr. Lodlever said to me if I would please write father for father to come down he would write himself but he is afraid that his letter would be opened I am very alone I hope that my husband will arrive here soon they have very beautiful weather I thank mother for the salt(?) and cotton goods and the small barrel of eggs there is not an egg to be gotten here for any money My brother Johannes has been 6 days away from here if mother does not have any sugar please buy it there for it has gone up so much they want one – and a half quart for a pound of brown sugar a ship arrived which did not have a pound along silk is a quart in Barbados nothing else for present but greetings to father and greet mother and sister naetje and to all the friends and remain your loving and dutiful daughter
