| Content Description | Signed by Frederick. Written at camp near the Battle of Fair Oaks [Seven Pines] in Henrico County, Virginia. Writes that Mr. Foss is in the camp with him but he arrived after the battle. Explains that the rebels tried to shell them out of their position but that his section did not see many cannonballs. During the battle they had about 40 wounded and "some" killed. Thinks that there will be a great battle before the Union Army gets to Richmond, Virginia. Writes that the troops sleep with their equipment on and have to get up at three A.M. to form a line of battle. He feels unsure about her showing his letter to others but he understands why she did it. One of his friends who he slept near is sick and in Baltimore, Maryland. The friend knew he received many letters from ladies and said that if a man wrote to his wife he would not stand it. Thanks her for writing him so many "friendly" letters. States that he may not be able to write her for some time. Writes that Mary's sister Laura will write to him as well. Tells her the truth that he does not drink his ration of whiskey. Writes that he could sell it but he does not need the money that badly. Notes added later in pencil about contents of the letter. |

| Additional Information | Franklin W. Fuller from Howard, Illinois enlisted on 14 August 1862 as a Sergeant. He mustered into the I Company of the Illinois 74th Infantry on 4 September 1862. He was mustered out on 10 June 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee. |
