Title Henry Jackson to Henry Knox regarding the purchase of half of Mount Desert and various islands off the coast of Maine
Date 31 July 1791
Author Jackson, Henry (1747-1809)
Recipient Knox, Henry
Document Type Correspondence; Land transaction document
Content Description References Knox's joint letter with William Duer of 26 July. Is happy he was able to anticipate their desires by concluding the deal on Thursday (this was for the purchase of half of Mount Desert and various islands off the coast of Maine). Goes on to describe the terms of the purchase. Says he is giving Mr. Gregorie, the seller, $100 to attend to the surveys to ensure that each settler has the exact quantity of land they are entitled to. Is also going to appoint a surveyor to attend to the entire purchase for Knox and Duer. When Jackson made this latest purchase for Knox, he had to use a third person to complete the deal, and he is giving that person $100. Says that he wanted to send a copy of the agreement he made with Gregorie, but that the translation into French has slowed things up. Will also send papers which describe the government grant he was given. Heard that Samuel Freeman of Portland is in a dispute with Gregorie over some of the land. Freeman said his grant was from the General Court in 1762. Jackson is not worried as "friends inform me, that Mr. G. title is good & unequivocal & there is no risque in purchasing it." Will contact Freeman nonetheless. When he was negotiating with Gregorie, two other purchasers appeared, but he says he closed the deal quickly. Says that John Lane of London owns the other half of Desert Island. Has reached out to Lane in order to purchase it.
