Content Description Taken from an album. The album contains 27 photographs of the military patients and staff of the U. S. Hospital in Philadelphia. Includes 20 identified patients (one of whom is John Walker, a 13 year old drummer boy), 4 male nurses and stewards. All of the patients are dressed in military uniforms. Information on the reverse of the Cartes de visite, written in ink, gives the subject’s identity, wounds or illness, and other details. The initial leaf of the album is inscribed ”Sallie M. Ogden, December 25, 186-.” The second leaf is inscribed ”Sick & Wounded at U. S. Hospital, Broad and Cherry Sts. Phila.” The photographs have been removed from the album pages.

Additional Information Sarah Perot Ogden was a Quaker from Philadelphia who took part in variety of philanthropic works such as assisting the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames of America, the Philadelphia Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, and President of the Philadelphia Home for Incurables. Both Ogden and her husband, Edward H. Ogden, were strong supporters of the Union cause. During the Civil War Ogden volunteered in a military hospital where she made daily visits. Her husband served as a Union soldier.
