Additional Information | George Davenport fought in the 5th regiment, Vermont infantry, B company and was fatally shot in the back of the head at the Battle of the Wilderness in May 1864. This collection consists of letters of condolence and support to his wife Frances following his death and her correspondence attempting to learn the facts surrounding his death and arrange for his burial. The later documents in the collection relate to Frances'' second husband Ebenezer J. Ormsbee and include war reminiscences written by Frances under her second married name, Frances Ormsbee. Ebenezer J. Ormsbee was lawyer, U.S. politician of the Republican Party and also a veteran of the Vermont Infantry. |
