Date | ca. 1794-1798 |
Author | Knox, Henry (1750-1806) |

Content Description | Discussion of a disagreement between Captain Samuel Nicholson and Colonel George Claghorn. The creator notes, "It appears pretty evident that the secret and real cause of the difference has been a jealousy of power." Apparently Nicholson opposed the admittance of two gentleman and ladies to an unspecified location (possibly the ship). The group Nicholson refused was associated with Claghorn. |

Additional Information | The power struggle referred to pertains to the U.S.S. Constitution, "Old Ironsides," one of the first frigates commissioned by the Navy after its 1794 reorganization. Claghorn was the ship builder, and according to this letter, Nicholson had both a commission from President Washington as commander and an appointment from the War office as superintendent of the frigate. Nicholson served as the Constitution's captain when it first set sail in 1798. |
