Content Description Barbara Frietchie gained fame for telling T. J. "Stonewall" Jackson to harm her rather than the Union flag at the time TJJ entered Frederick, Maryland. Longfellow published the poem in Nov. 1863 and the Great Central (Sanitary) Fair in Philadelphia opened in 1864. (Lincoln addressed the fair in 6/16/1864)
