Title Articles of two treaties, concluded at Galphinton and Shoulderbone Creek between Georgia and the Creek Nation
Date 12 November 1785 - 2 June 1789
Author Milton, John (ca. 1740-1804)
Document Type Government document; Legal document; Land transaction document
Content Description Clerical copies of treaties concluded at Galphinton between "commissioners appointed on the part of the state of Georgia" and the Creek Nation. Verified as a true copy by the Secretary of the State of Georgia, John Milton. Apparently establishes the land upon which it is acceptable for Creeks to settle in the state of Georgia. Copies of signatures of several dozen members of the Commission and of the Creek Nation, including John Twiggs, Elijah Clark, Warrior King, and Okmulgey Tusknackey. The first five pages (numbered 1-5 in a later hand) comprise a clerical copy of the signed 12 November 1785 Treaty of Galphinton between the state of Georgia and the Creek Nation. The ensuing ten pages (numbered 10-19 in a later hand) comprise a clerical copy of the signed 3 November 1786 Treaty of Shoulderbone Creek between the state of Georgia and the Creek Nation. The last two pages (numbered 20 and 22 in a later hand) are separate attestations, each bearing the clerical signature of John Milton, that the foregoing are true copies of the treaties, one dated 2 June 1789. (Page "20" does not specify which treaty; page "22" specifies the Galphinton Treaty.) See GLC02437.03222 for a related document (probably originally another component of the same document). These three treaty copies appear to have been prepared at the same time, and thus likely postdate the latest treaty date of 3 November 1786.
