My Dear Husband, I hope this will find you in good health. It grieves me that you did not stay long enough for Ghysbert to [be able to] be present. They have now measured in accordance with their wishes – as you can see – how things are with the village. They are now measuring at the front side and that includes half of the hop-garden. They say that across the kill he can clear as much land again as he has near his fence. He follows the [boundary-] line over the height along the back side of Japick’s barn and wants to have more than half of [Van] Dyck’s plain, which I have bought from Mannagh and Meledie when you had gone to England for the first time. They won’t get anything of it! I will never permit it! Those greedy people, whose father told me that they cleared his land beyond the line; and [that] they got their rent for it as they were entitled to. [And:] why would they not have demanded rent for it? That made it worth taking 150 sch. 1)of seed-grain. I hope you will order it well so that they will not get it, those misers! I hope you will send the salt and steel buttons and some pewter with the yacht. My regards to Naetye2) and Alida Veets 3)and all friends. Your Beloved Wife Alida Livinghston. Our wheat is doing very badly. In the left margin: Kruck has not been here yet, nor [has] Abraham. Notes: 1) “sch.” = “schepels” 2) Spelled “Natie” in Robert’s letters. 3) More commonly spelled: “Vetch”.
